The Honourable Dr. Renganaden Padayachy, Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, conducted a visit to Natec Medical Ltd and its partners namely Xtruline Ltd and Abiolabs Ltd, on Tuesday 23rd of February 2021 at the Natec Headquarters in Ebene. The objective of the site visit was to discover the innovative service offerings and cutting-edge technology utilised by Natec group of companies. 

During a guided tour by Vincent Lagarde and Stéphane Lefèvre, respectively president and CEO of Natec Medical Ltd, Minister Padayachy was able to see first-hand the meticulous work that goes into creating our life saving catheters. The minister and his delegation were given an insight to Natec’s in-house vertical integrated setup, from the research and development department, the quality control department and machinery and equipment department.

Minister Padayachy also had the opportunity to visit the partners of Natec Medical Ltd, namely Xtruline and Abiolabs Ltd.  The former’s main activity is the extrusion of tubes used as raw materials in the manufacture of catheters. 

First Mauritian company manufacturing disposable surgical mask

During the visit Xtruline Ltd. unveil its capacity to produce 400,000 disposable surgical masks per month thanks to its own production line. With the official launch of this project, Xtruline Ltd will be the first company to manufacture disposable surgical facemasks locally thus making Mauritius self-sufficient in terms of facemask consumption. This is a step forward especially in this challenging period; which sees Mauritius having to deal with a 2nd wave of Covid-19 cases. 

The Minister of Finance commended Xtruline Ltd for establishing a dedicated facemask production unit. He expressed his satisfaction for the determination shown by Natec medical and its partners. This affirms the agility and resilience of the organisation, thereby enhancing self-sufficiency and reducing dependency on imported items.

Natec’s combat against Covid-19 using its partnering laboratory facilities 

Abiolabs Ltd operates a medical laboratory which provides a complete range of tests and analyses that meet the highest internationally recognized standards. Their test offerings including ancestry (exploring your origins), paternity test, sports performance test (sports aptitudes), genetic test (your predisposition to certain disease such as diabetes, Alzheimer, gluten intolerance), diagnosis of trisomy or other genetic characteristics.  

Abiolabs is using its in-house expertise combined with substantial and upgraded investment equipment to provide RT PCR (Covid-19 diagnostic) testing and sequencing of Covid-19 variants. The laboratory has the capacity to perform 300 COVID-19 RT-PCR tests per day.

Natec becomes a pillar in the industry 

The government works closely with Natec Medical for the development of the company and the sector. The minister of finance endorsed Natec and considers the group already as a pillar of the local economy. 

It was a wonderful opportunity for Natec Medical, Xtruline and Abiolabs to show their state-of-the-art high tech premises, and to demonstrate the potential Mauritius has to offer as a key player in the international scene and in the Medical Device Industry. With a production capacity of one million catheters per year and more than 20 customers worldwide, Natec Medical is very much on course to take its development to the next level.
