Every year, World Cancer Day is a day dedicated to raising awareness, improving education, pushing towards equity of healthcare services and increasing government accountability in the name of reducing and eliminating cancer. Run by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), this organisation represents thousands of cancer organisations from 162 countries around the world.
To create awareness on cancer, Natec Medical and its partners organised a talk for its employees on 4th February to mark the World Cancer Day. This initiative was made possible thanks to the collaboration of CANMA (Cancer Association of Mauritius) Dr Vedita Khugputh and Dr Khushboo Sooklall provided an insightful seminar at our premises to address our employees on the common causes of cancer, prevention and self-examination methods. CANMA’s purpose is to lead the fight against cancer in Mauritius.
At Natec Medical, we believe that a healthy employee is a productive employee, and it is important for all members of our organisation to be aware of potential diseases and how to cope with it. We also believe that education can become an individual’s ‘best line of defence’ People often do not react as they aren’t informed and therefore becoming empowered to self-diagnose may just save an individual’s life.
The programme outlined by CANMA
- Spread awareness on cancer
- Provide tips on how to live a heathier lifestyle
- outlines how spotting cancer early can save lives and
- where to go for help with any concerns
We were encouraged that more than 60% of our employees took part in this interactive workshop and was met with positivity and encouraging feedback. Personal consultations with the doctors were also made available for those seeking further information.
The current theme for World Cancer Day is ‘I Am and I Will’, a 3-year campaign running from 2019 to 2021. It is focused on creating impact and increasing public exposure and engagement on all matters surrounding cancer.
